What is “Green Justice”?
It’s more than just changing light bulbs. It is about a transformation of our hearts and minds to see God’s creation in new ways that lead to living in new ways. It is about acting on new values in your life and in the life of your community. Green justice may be perceived as “giving up something,” but it is really about gaining a life and a community spirit based on relationships and belonging and care of God’s creation, and it works at the individual, community, and global levels.
We of the First United Church of Carlisle strive to live Green Justice at home and in our Church. “Take care of the world, and God will take care of you!”
How You Can Help?
Take the pledge to incorporate Green Justice into your life. How can you foster a cleaner, greener community?
MORE RECYCLING . . .
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for April 27, 2019. DO NOT flush drugs down the toilet or put them out in the trash. Such drugs are a serious problem in our water supply and it is difficult, if not impossible, for sewer systems to remove them from waste water. Put the unused drugs away in a safe place until you can take them to a take-back location on April 27. You can visit https://takebackday.dea.gov/ for more details.
Act 108 – the Covered Device Recycling Act – went into effect on January 24, 2013. All equipment such as “televisions and computer equipment, including monitors, CPUs, laptops, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, speakers, and any other devices that connect to a computer” must now be recycled. They must be kept out of landfill to protect us from mercury and other heavy metals. You will probably be seeing more about locations where you may take this material. I noticed on my last trip to Wegman’s that they have bins out to take cell phones and ink jet cartridges. The Computer Barn will take computers. For those of you who live further west in the county New Hope Recycling will take batteries and small electronics, including car batteries, old reading glasses, used appliances, print cartridges, computers and components (but no TVs or appliances which use Freon). All batteries over 9 volts must be taped over the metal terminals. New Hope recycling is located at the Hopewell Township Building on Three Square Hollow Road. They operate the first Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Keep aware because I am sure that more of the “big box” stores will be announcing items they will take for recycling.
